Innovating service delivery models to reduce barriers to access.
There are common barriers to accessing Speech-Language Therapy including cost, wait-time, time commitment, travel distance, stigma and others. There may also be specific barriers, such as navigating new systems, languages and cultural assumptions for globally mobile families. I am interested in how SLT can be provided more flexibly in order to overcome, or at least mitigate, these barriers. With that in mind, I have been trying combinations of telepractice, telecoaching and investigating the ways the details of these can be tweaked for success.
This is an ongoing project - my early reflections are summarised in my poster in the 'Publications' tab.
Experiences of Third Culture Kid families in accessing Speech Language Therapy service globally.
Mershen Pillay and I are supervising Kirsten Wachter in her Masters' project in which she is investigating the experiences of TCK families accessing SLT services, including both the barriers to access and the factors that have been helpful.
If you have moved from your home country and have accessed (or tried to access) Speech-Language Therapy for your child, we would love to hear from you. Please use the QR code on the left to complete the survey.
